The Building Blocks of an Animator: How 14-Year Old Preston Mutanga Became an Animator for “Spider-Man Across the Spider-Verse”

Lots of people have their favorite movies and series, but what if you could be a part of the next installment in the series? Preston Mutanga is a 14-year old animator from Toronto, Canada who has a Youtube channel filled with different Lego-based animations. One particular animation caught the eyes of producers Chris Lord and Phil Miller – both of whom were also directors of 2014’s “The LEGO Movie.” The team watched Mutanga’s Lego rendition of the trailer for “Spider-Man Across the Spider-Verse'' in amazement. This led the team to hire Mutanga as their remote animator for the movie’s Lego universe.
Mutanga said he began animating as a kid after his father showed him “this 3-D software called Blender and I instantly got hooked on it.” He mentioned how he continued learning by watching Youtube videos. Mutanga is still a high schooler, but now he’s one step closer to becoming a full time animator. He said, “I adored the first movie and was so hyped for the second one, so getting to work with the people who actually made this masterpiece was honestly like a dream.”
